Carroll Lutheran Village is expanding its green initiatives with a two-phased approach including LED lighting and solar panels to reduce energy consumption and costs. The green initiatives uphold the community’s core values of innovation and community.

The first phase involved transitioning to LED lighting and energy efficient features, which reduced CLV’s lighting consumption by 71%, 421,270 kwh of energy. The installation replaced nearly 2,000 bulbs, fixtures and lamps and 205 lighting control sensors in the community’s apartment buildings and outdoor grounds. The energy efficient sensors detect motion and daylight. Existing fixtures were retrofitted to accommodate LED lighting and incandescent lighting was replaced with LED lighting in fixtures that did not require replacement. Participating in BG&E’s Smart Energy Savers program saved an additional $34,000 on project costs.

Progressing to the second phase, the community recently received permits for its solar panel installation project.  Solar Energy Services and Mission Energy will begin installing 403 solar energy panels on the roof of the apartment buildings located on 1000 Weller Circle, saving the community an estimated $60,000 to $70,000 per year.

“Donors and residents are very exited to see CLV move forward on these projects because they demonstrate the leadership team is being good stewards of the resources entrusted to the community,” stated Janet Buchanan, vice-president of philanthropy for Lutheran Social Ministries of Maryland, CLV’s managing organization.

Carroll Lutheran Village, a community of Lutheran Social Ministries of Maryland, is an accredited, not-for-profit continuing care retirement community in Westminster, Md. serving nearly 700 residents in 397 homes and apartments, 50 assisted living suites and 103 skilled care beds.  For more information about the CLV, call 410-848-0090 or visit clvillage.org.
