Glen Messier, principal of Mechanicsville Elementary School, has
been chosen as the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP)
National Distinguished Principal of the Year (NDP). MAESP, a state affiliate of the National
Association of Elementary School Principals, selected Messier based on his
dedication and exemplary leadership skills.

Messier is described as a champion of equity and culturally responsive thinking. He has led his staff in developing understanding of culturally responsive practices including a reconfiguration at Mechanicsville Elementary of the Gifted and Talented identification process. He serves his entire school community – staff, students, and parents – by being present as an active listener, being responsive to concerns and ideas, and through his compassion and encouragement.

Messier is a visionary
leader who celebrates his teachers, staff, students and community at
large. He models and supports for all
staff self-reflective practices to build opportunities for new learning and
refinement of teacher skills and craft. Through the national organization, he was selected in 2018 to
participate in the Lifetouch Memory Mission where he was part of a larger team
assisting in building an elementary school playground in Puerto Rico. He was recently certified as a National
Principal Mentor and has engaged in supporting aspiring leaders through a NAESP
Aspiring Leadership Academy.

 

Messier has served as the Carroll County representative to MAESP
for the past 3 years. He is the first
member of MAESP from Carroll County Public Schools to be chosen as a National
Distinguished Principal. 

 

With the help of Mechanicsville assistant principal John Courtney,
the announcement was made by Terry Ball, MAESP Executive Director, at a
surprise celebration on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. Messier will be honored along with other
state NDPs at a two-day function in Washington, DC in October 2021 (TBD based
on current COVID restrictions).
