Tierney is a constant presence at county, regional and community
music events, attending Northwest Region Band and String events as well as the
county’s annual Eisteddfod concerts and the annual Taneytown tree-lighting
ceremony. He willingly helps on concert days, from moving equipment, chairs and
stands to participating in the second grade musical, to the delight of
students, staff and parents!
During virtual and hybrid instruction, Tierney worked hard and
creatively to generate schedules that maintain the integrity of Specials’
curriculum and has always asked for staff input in the process. He views music
and all Specials as an integral and important part of a child’s education.
According to Runnymede music teacher Lori Douglas, who recommended
Tierney for the award, “In December, instrumental students had virtual caroling
performances for the school before the winter break. Mr. Tierney came to most,
if not all, of these events – there were 22 half hours in all. He stayed for
each one and waited until students left to call each musician by name and
congratulate them on a job well done.”
The award will be presented to Mr. Tierney at the MMEA
Awards for Excellence virtual ceremony on Saturday, April 10th.
