Carroll County Public Schools
middle and high school students recently participated in a rewarding
service-learning opportunity in collaboration with Blue Star Mothers of
America, Inc. (BSMA). Students created hundreds of cards and care packages for
service members, while earning nearly 10,000 service-learning hours.

The project began when Diné Mongold, service-learning coordinator for Westminster
High School, received a proposal this March from BSMA and began
recruiting students for the volunteer effort. Word of this service-learning
opportunity spread quickly and it was expanded to other middle and high
schools.

Cards and letters filled with
heart-warming messages of appreciation, stories, jokes, and intricate artwork
were transported to the America’s Warrior Care Package Project organization for
distribution. Many service members treasure these items for a lifetime.

 

Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc.
(BSMA) is a national non-profit organization that supports active military,
veterans, and their families. Members are mothers of the men and women, who are
serving or have been honorably discharged, from the Armed Forces of the United
States.
