Students progress through competitions at the school, district, state, and national levels. Students from public, private, parochial, home, and cyber schools are welcome to participate.  District contests are held throughout Maryland every February and March.

• Sumiya Rahaman, a 10th grade student at Westminster
  High School, received the Excellence in Labor History award for her documentary
  project entitled Tiananmen Square Massacre: Censorship of Communication.

• Natalie Castonguay, a 6th
  grade student at West Middle School, received the Excellence in Maryland
  History award for her website project, Union Mills Homestead Rural Free
  Delivery.

In addition, Bethanie Leader, an Advanced Academics teacher at Mt.
Airy and Northwest Middle Schools, was recognized as the Maryland History Day
Teacher of the Year for Carroll County.

Each year more than 25,000 middle and high school
students in classrooms throughout Maryland immerse themselves in in-depth
research and create original documentaries, exhibits, performances, research
papers, or websites exploring a breadth of historical topics. Working
solo or in small groups, students create original documentaries, exhibits,
performances, research papers or websites focusing on an annual theme.
