Over 16? You May Not Have to Wear a Helmet in Sykesville

A proposed code amendment will put an age limit on who is required to wear helmets when using a bicycle, scooter, skates, skateboard or motorized scooter.

Have you been riding your bike without a helmet? Even if you're an adult, it's currently illegal, according to the current code.

A proposed amendment change will put an age limit on who is required to wear a helmet within town limits.

According to Town Manager Matt Candland, the code was never changed from the existing laws adopted in 1965.

The code amendment would change the language to require only those under the age of 17 to wear a helmet while operating, riding, or using a bicycle, scooter, skates, skateboard, or motorized scooter on a public roadway, bicycle path, linear parkway, town park or any right-of-way under the jurisdiction and control of the Town of Sykesville, according to Candland.

The helmet worn must exceed the standards set by the American National Standards Institute or the director of the Department of Transportation standards.
