Local Store Brings Sweet and Healthy Treat to Carroll County

Lexie's brings a unique treat that's more than just dessert.

Cool treats during the summer are usually limited to ice cream or popsicles in the Eldersburg area, but a new local business is looking to change that.

Lexie’s offers more than just a sweet dessert, the frozen yogurt shop gives customers a healthy and “fun” treat that’s unique for the area.

Running a restaurant isn’t foreign territory for Todd Levitt owner and founder of Lexie’s Frozen Yogurt. He owns all four of the Five Guys restaurants in Carroll County and decided his next venture should include something a little sweeter.

“I wanted to bring something to Carroll County that takes a store and makes it a fun and active environment,” said Levitt who named his store after his six-year-old daughter Lexie. “Yogurt’s a lifestyle change. It’s something that’s healthy that’s recreating the ice cream shop. This to me is the ice cream shop of this generation.”

The store at 1311 Londontowne Blvd. in Eldersburg opened its doors in March and is the first of its kind in the area and the first for Levitt and his crew. Since then, he opened a second location on Memorial Day in Rehoboth Beach, six blocks from the boardwalk.

Next on the agenda is licensing the Lexie’s product nationally and internationally.

“The licensing model would be selling the brand and what we do but if someone opens a do it yourself salad place or a gym, it can be a complimentary item instead of a full service store,” said Levitt. “It’s the benefits of the product without all of the franchise fees associated with opening a chain.”

The product itself is simple and aimed at giving customers a fun and healthy option for their diet. The yogurt is made with pasteurized milk and live and active cultures instead of from a dry product, giving the health benefits of eating yogurt and not just the taste.

The serve it yourself style gives customers the option of mix-ins and fresh custom made Belgian waffles in addition to numerous yogurt flavors.

Lexie’s also involved the local county public schools in its Eldersburg menu, challenging students with making a special yogurt shake to represent their school.

“We created a program with the local schools called the 'Local Lexie Mix,' where each school in the area got to create their own shake,” said Levitt. “It was voted on by each school and the principal signed off on it, so we have in our shake menu 12 different types of shakes representing schools in the area with 15 percent of the money going back to the schools themselves.”

Levitt also has plans to start a non-profit organization this year through the business aiming at changing lifestyles and helping those who have autoimmune diseases.

So why move from opening restaurants aimed at the fast food crowd to starting a business focusing on the health conscious customer?

“I have fulfilled my territory in the fast food world and I needed something to do next,” said Levitt. “It seemed like a lot of fun and I feel very passionate about it. It’s a good quality and healthy project. I hate to even call it dessert because I see it replacing breakfast or dessert in the future as it often does for me.”
