Merritt Athletic Club Hopes to “Rock the Pool”

New program offers kids and teens a safe haven.

Merritt Athletic Club is attempting to make Saturday nights not only fun but safe, with a new program kicking off this weekend.

The Eldersburg location will host four "Rock the Pool" events, each with a different theme, at the outdoor pool area and multi-purpose gym starting June 25 at 7 p.m. Two events will be geared for children ages 7-12 and two events will be for teens 13-17.

“I have three children and I designed this program with the interests of kids from our area in mind,” said Rachael Gracia, aquatics director at Merritt Athletic Clubs Eldersburg and director of the "Rock the Pool" events. “Each of the parties will be safe and fun, packed with a variety of music, games and entertainment.”

To ensure a safe environment, Merritt will staff the event with at least four lifeguards trained and certified in AED, First-Aid and CPR, chaperones and security guards.

The parties will feature activities including jumping waves in the wave pool, floating down the lazy river and riding the waterslide. Preteens can also expect glow sticks, sack races, face painters, water-balloon fights and a moon bounce.

The teen parties will kick off with a battle of the bands featuring local high school bands, and future parties will include a karaoke and 80s night themes. Both the preteen and teen parties will feature a DJ and prizes, and food can be purchased from Frank’s Pizza or the club’s snack bar.

“My husband and I will be able to go out to dinner and enjoy some quiet time with peace of mind, knowing our son is safe at Merritt,” said Val Willet, Merritt Athletic Clubs member. “Our entire family is looking forward to it.”

“This program is designed to serve the entire Eldersburg community, emphasizing family and neighborhood unity,” said Garcia. “If we attract the turnout we expect, we plan to make this a weekly summertime event for the young people in our community.”
