Sykesville Police Department Announces 5th Annual Junior CSI Academy

The program is funded by the Freedom District Lion's Club Youth Outreach program.

The Sykesville Police Department announces that its fifth annual Junior Crime Scene Investigation Academy for local middle schoolers will take place this May.Β 

"The program has become extremely popular for our youth and has produced excellent feedback from the children and parents," read a press release from the Sykesville Police Department. "There are no tuition fees for the academy. All we ask the students to bring is their eagerness and smiles!"

This year’s program will run from Wednesday, May 30Β through Wednesday, JuneΒ 20.Β The first three classes will be held at the Sykesville Police Department from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and graduation will be held at the Sykesville Middle School on Wednesday, June 22.

All middle-school aged children who reside within the town of Sykesville or live in surrounding neighborhoods are encouraged to sign up for the four sessions. Children entering sixth, seventh, or eighth grade orΒ those completing eighthΒ grade are eligible to apply. Admission is granted on a "first come, first serve" basis.Β 

One of the returning instructors will be CSI Technician Bullock from the Carroll County Sheriff's Office who will give a presentation on the various types of equipment used at a crime scene. The program will also feature the return of Cpl. Dave Lewis who will instruct the students on the procedures needed to investigate crime scenes, conducting grid searches, dusting for fingerprints and more.

Veteran Homicide Detective Earl Kratsch will also instruct the students on how important "good" investigations are in solving homicides.

Detective Jamie Burke will also return to share his experience and expertise on "interviews and interrogation."

This year’s Jr. CSI Program will be funded by the Freedom District Lion’s Club Youth Outreach program.Β
