The Sykesville Police Remind Residents to Celebrate New Year's Safely
During a holiday associated with drinking, the Sykesville police remind locals to drive safely.

While celebrating the New Year, the local police department reminds residents to stay safe and keep some tips in mind before getting behind the wheel.
"Do not drive after you've been drinking. Plan ahead to have a designated driver," said Cpl. Dave Lewis of the Sykesville Police Department.
"If you find yourself without a designated driver, pay for a taxi to get you home, or stay where you are until you're able to drive," he said.

"The obvious danger of death, injury and property damage aside, there will be a lot of police on the road that night with one objective, lock up drunks. The cost of even a first time DUI arrest is staggering. Not to mention the associated tow fees, loss of vehicle, embarrassment and dramatically increased insurance rates."
In addition to driving safe, it's also important to stay alert of your surroundings in case drunk drivers are on the road, or in case of alcohol induced fights at local bars.

"If you have to drive, stay alert and drive defensively and be aware of your surroundings and the behavior of those around you," said Lewis. "Be aware that alcohol intake increases the chances of violence and fights. Along with that, monitor your intake of alcohol. A night of fun can result in a lot of regret."
Aside from safe partying tips, it's important to be mindful of dangers at home, said Lewis.
"Look after your pets. Some animals are frightened by the loud noises the holiday brings. Beware of candles and wood stoves. Only ground based fireworks are allowed in Maryland," said Lewis.
As for New Year's resolutions, Lewis reminds residents to make staying safe part of a daily routine.
"Make a New Year's resolution to lock your cars and homes. Remove valuables from cars. Look after your neighbors, and hope that they are looking after you."
