Ice Possible on Maryland Roads Wednesday: State Highway Administration

Just because roads have been plowed, it doesn't mean drivers are in the clear.

The Maryland State Highway Administration said drivers west of the I-95 corridor will have to be extremely cautious overnight and Wednesday morning due to possible freezing rain and drizzle.

Carroll, Howard, Montgomery, Washington and Frederick counties are under a winter weather advisory for freezing rain from midnight to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Even in areas where freezing rain may not be a factor, the melting snow could pose a danger.

"The potential for icy conditions is possible from melted snow and new precipitation, whether it is rain, sleet or freezing rain," SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a prepared statement.

Bridges, ramp and overpasses—which are three to five degrees colder than other surfaces—will be particularly vulnerable to freezing, according to the State Highway Administration.

"...driving on ice is more hazardous than driving in snow and motorists will need to be extremely cautious this evening and during tomorrow morning’s commute," Peters said Tuesday.

State Highway Administration's Tips for Driving in Icy Conditions

• Use caution when merging at ramps and intersections.
• Avoid sudden braking or aggressive steering.
• Don’t use cruise control–monitor your driving speeds.
• Fill windshield washer fluid to keep the view clear.
• Turn on headlights when using your wipers. It’s Maryland law.
• Buckle up! Drivers and all passengers of all ages must wear safety belts.
