Wrestling: South Carroll Drops Regional Final to Winters Mill

South Carroll and Winters Mill met for the second time in five days and this time the results were different.

The Cavaliers downed the Falcons Saturday for the county title in Westminster. This time the location was Winfield and Winters Mill won the Class 2A/1A West regional dual meet crown with a 34-25 win.

"We lost the position battles. They pushed us. They really wanted it tonight. We wish them the best-of-luck this weekend. They were a great team tonight. For us, we got to refocus and be ready for the county tournament," said Cavalier coach Bryan Hamper.

South Carroll seeded first in the region tangled with fourth-seeded Williamsport first for the right to advance to the final. The Cavaliers downed the Wildcats, 43-25.

Winters Mill, seeded second faced third seeded Southern Garrett in their first match. The Falcons edged the Rams, 35-34.

"We knew it was going to be a great match. It’s a very well trained team. They have a lot of great wrestlers. They just beat us tonight. The better team won tonight, they wanted it more and executed better than we did. There are things we have to work on. We know we have a great team and tonight was another step mentally maturing. Obviously this stings a little bit," said Hamper.

Winters Mill used three pins and a major decision to defeat the Cavaliers. South Carroll which used bonus points to win Saturday only garnished two pins and a major decision Wednesday.

"This is a monster, monster region. I think all four of these teams could win the states. I think we were lucky enough to do it. I think the guys feel like they can take it all," said Falcon coach John Lowe.
