The Arc of Howard County Honors Volunteers

The Arc of Howard County honored its volunteers at a celebration April 10.  The event, “Behold the Power of Volunteers,” featured special recognition for its “superheroes,” those who had distinguished themselves in service to The Arc.  Executive Director Carol A. Beatty, Volunteer Coordinator Lisa Kawata, Past President and 2012 Volunteer of the Year Richard Dean and Board Member and Volunteer Appreciation Committee member Kim McKay presented the certificates of appreciation.

The awards and the winners included:

Captain America: Eagle Scout Collin Dohner was cited for his efforts in completing The Arc’s back courtyard at its headquarters on Homewood Road in Ellicott City.  Dynamic Duo: Susan LeBoeuf and Cathy Martello were honored for their “genius” and “optimistic” team teaching to The Arc’s Employment Group. Invisible Woman: Cathy Goodemote was recognized for her work on the safety committee.  Katniss Everdeen: Breanne Dancel’s “selflessness and bravery” were honored. Superman: Chip McAuliffe was recognized for his “leadership and intelligence” as Logistics Chair of The Arc’s signature Chocolate Ball.  Isis: Another Chocolate Ball volunteer, Sheila Greenfield, was honored for 15 years of service.  Elastigirl: Katrina Lowe was honored for teaching sign language to day program participants.  Sage: Therese Dalyrmple was recognized as the “ultimate multi-tasker” volunteer and for organizing the book club for young women. Wonder Woman: Cherise Petty was cited for her workshops on safe and healthy relationships for young women. Iron Man: Will McKinzie and Dave Cameron were honored for their help with the triathlon water stations. Hawkwoman:  Columbia Wegmans General Manager Wendy Webster was cited for her support of The Arc and other good works.

The Justice League: Among the groups honored, Team Embrace, which raises funds for The Arc by participating in triathlon and other sports events, was cited for its “never give-up attitude.”  The Avengers: St. John’s Episcopal Church was recognized for organizing hundreds of volunteers to make Christmas and Easter baskets for people supported by The Arc.  X-Men: St. John’s Youth Group was honored for help with The Arc’s Ladies Night Out program.  The Green Lantern: The Howard County Garden Club was presented a citation for making the grounds of The Arc “a more beautiful place for all” who use or visit the headquarters building.
