Cheering for Community!

Cheering for Community! Elkridge Businesses support student athlete's bid to National Competition!

On Saturday May 4, 2013 the Elkridge Hurricanes Cheerleaders will be competing in the US FINALS CHEER COMPETITION in Virginia Beach. Their hard earned bid to compete comes after months of practice and preparation and with loads of support from the Elkridge Community.

The Elkridge Hurricanes Organization celebrated their 10th season in the fall of 2013. Many are familiar with their stellar football program. Families from many neighboring communities from Laurel to Catonsville sign up with the Canes because of their well-respected reputation. What many are learning is that Football isn’t their only sport gaining notable recognition. In the past few years that same momentum has taken root in the Elkridge Hurricanes Cheer Program! In the Fall of 2013, lead by co-directors Stacey Dix and Elaine Reese, the program was home to three squads and 47 girls ranging in age from 4 1/2 to 13!

The road to the Nationals started in August and included First Place recognition for the Junior and Senior squads in the MID MARYLAND YOUTH FOOTBALL AND CHEER Competition at The University of Maryland in November. The winter team made up of 25 young women took First place at the Reach the Beach Competition in Ocean City, MD where they earned their bid to compete this upcoming weekend to bring home A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Among the many remarkable things about the Elkridge Hurricane’s Football and Cheer Programs is the strong sense of community that is at the core of the organization. That value is shared by local businesses in the community that have gone above and beyond helping these young women fund-raise so they could see their goal through. Green Valley Marketplace is one such example.

On April 27th and 28th Green Valley Marketplace generously supported these young athletes by hosting a two-day community yard sale. Participants donated $10 to have a table and sell their treasures. The fees for the tables went to support the expense of the upcoming trip. By making announcements as customers shopped they shared what was going on and why they were doing it. This kind of encouragement speaks volumes about the values of the Elkridge Community.
