Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department Remembers September 11

The fire department stood at attention on Old Washington Road on Sunday for the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Members of the stood outside the firehouse on Old Washington Road on Sunday to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks 10 years before.

"At 8:30 a.m., the apparatus [fire trucks] rolled out," said Jay Mathews, who participated in the 9/11 ceremony in Elkridge as part of the honor guard.

Firefighters listened to the 9/11 in Marriottsville from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with heads bowed.

"A pear tree was found in the smoldering rubble of the World Trade Center," said the broadcast. According to the speaker, the pear tree measured 8 feet when it was rescued after Sept. 11, 2001. Now, it's been placed in the Bronx, where it has grown to 30 feet.

All police stations and fire stations in Howard County planted pear trees "as a way of reflecting on the character and spirit of our nation," said the broadcast.

At the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department, which out of its , the tree was planted in a pot, and will move to the new station when it is built.
