Greater Elkridge Police Report: March 12–20

Officer en route to work saves baby and other incidents reported.

A dispute outside the Elkridge Superfresh sent one person to the hospital, an apartment fire in Columbia left two firefighters injured, and a baby's life was saved on the side of Route 100 by a police officer on his way to work. Sunday, March 20

One person was injured as the result of a fight outside the Elkridge at 7:45 p.m., according to police. When officials arrived, one man had been cut in the hand and his tires slashed, according to Howard County police spokeswoman Elizabeth Schroen, who said the suspect and victim had an ongoing dispute over money.

The victim was taken to St. Agnes Hospital for treatment, said Schroen, and shortly thereafter, officers located and arrested Kalif Omar Richardson. Richardson, 21, of Riverdale, was charged with two counts of assault as well as destruction of property over $500. He was taken to Howard County Detention Center and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 19, according to court documents.

Friday, March 18

Two firefighters were injured and several residents displaced after a in Columbia. The fire was reported at 10:15 a.m. and took an hour to get under control. One firefighter suffered a serious hand injury, according to officials.

Thursday, March 17

  • Anne Arundel County Police from a residence in Severn. Two men were arrested in connection with the drugs, which were estimated to be worth $14,000.
  • Three cars were stolen from the in Elkridge, reported at 11:57 a.m.

Wednesday, March 16

  • Nobody was injured during a basement fire on the 8300 block of Lincoln Drive in Jessup, reported at approximately 11 p.m. Within 30 minutes, firefighters had the situation under control, said Howard County Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Jackie Cutler. “Both occupants were displaced and are staying with a family in the neighborhood,” said Cutler. “The cause is under investigation.”
  • Video games and gaming console were stolen after someone broke a glass panel, reached inside and unlocked a door on the 6000 block of Old Washington Road in Elkridge. The theft was reported at 3:45 p.m.

Monday, March 14

  • A shut down part of the highway near the Arundel Mills Boulevard exit at approximately 3:15 p.m.
  • There was an unsuccessful break-in attempt on the 5800 block of Main Street in Elkridge in which someone tried to enter by ripping a window screen. The incident was reported at 12:51 p.m. (Editor's note: On , there was a theft on the 5700 block of Main Street in Elkridge, reported at 1 p.m.)
  • after a break-in at jewelry store in Ellicott City before 3 a.m. When police searched the suspects' vehicle, they also linked them with the robbery of in Ellicott City, on March 8.
  • A Maryland State Policeman delivered a baby on Route 100 on his way to work, said officials. During the commute from his home in Pasadena to the station in Jessup, Sergeant Daniel McLain stopped at approximately 7:45 a.m. when he noticed what he thought was a disabled motorist along Route 100 near Route 10. According to a statement from Maryland State Police, "Sergeant McLain saw a man outside the vehicle and detected a look of panic and distress not normally seen—even on the faces of disabled motorists."

    As he approached the car, McLain found a woman in the backseat had just given birth to a baby who was turning blue, according to police.

    “Without hesitation, Sgt. McLain immediately began CPR on the newborn," said the report, and she resumed breathing. "She soon returned to a healthy pink color and was transported by ambulance, along with her mother, to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Both are reportedly doing well," said police.

Saturday, March 12

  • A video game system, TV and two laptops were stolen from the 6100 block of Rainbow Road in Elkridge, reported at 11 p.m.
  • Five juveniles were arrested following a break-in at Carmax on the 8800 block of Freestate Drive in Laurel at approximately 2 a.m. A witness called police after seeing the suspects driving on a secured lot when the dealership was closed, damaging several of the vehicles.
