National Running Day: Racing Around Elkridge

It's race season in Elkridge schools and parks.

June 1 is National Running Day, but runners have been hitting the pavement in Elkridge for charity for the past month. Here’s a look back at a couple of recent races.

St. Augustine School's 

  • Number of runners: 300
  • How long it’s been going on: 7 years
  • Where runners ran off to: Quarter-mile track set up around the parking lot
  • Cause it supports: Technology programs for St. Augustine students
  • Funds raised: $10,000 as of mid-month. (Target: $20,000 to $30,00; last year’s total was $26,000.)
  • Who won: John Kelchaw (prekindergarten), Felix Smolen (grade 1), Aidan Donnelly (grade 2), Robbie Dunham (grade 3), Thomas Skrynecki (grade 4), Cameron Haislip (grade 5), Jason Schneck (grade 6), Sean Zaranski (grade 7), and Michael Berhane (grade 8)
  • Sponsors: Bakers Express, Cindy's Soft Serve, CAC, AnswerQuest.com, Dunklee Screen Printing, , Heartlands Assisted Living at Severna Park, No-Frost,

  • Cause it supports: Route 1 Day Center, which provides services like food and counseling for 200 local homeless people each month
  • Funds raised: $3,000
  • Who won: Robert Stephens (male) and Donna Wecker (female)
  • Sponsors: Bethany Lane Baptist Church, Howard County Council Chairman Calvin Ball, , Friendship Church, Horizon Foundation, Mid-Maryland Baptist Association, Nestle-Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream, Route One Day Center
