Special Operations Attend to Spill on Route 1 in Elkridge

Herbicides on Washington Boulevard led to a 20-minute cleanup.

The county’s special operations unit paid a visit to Elkridge Thursday morning because of a barrel in a road, said officials.

After a 50-gallon barrel of weed spray fell off a truck on Washington Boulevard, “a combination of units responded,” said Jackie Cutler, spokeswoman for Howard County Fire and Rescue Services.

The barrel fell as the truck’s driver was making a turn onto Route 1 near Brookdale Drive at approximately 8:55 a.m., Cutler said.

“There was minimum spillage on the location and [it] presented no threat to the public,” said Cutler. “Traffic was impacted for about 20 minutes while our special operations unit cleaned the scene.”

Special operations officials used absorbent materials to clean off the roadway, Cutler explained, according to guidelines established by Maryland’s Department of the Environment.
