85+ Infrastructure Projects Completed Before School To Improve Student Safety

To help improve student safety, the county completed more than 85 infrastructure projects before school started.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — More than 85 infrastructure improvements designed to improve the safety and connectivity of walking routes have been completed across Howard County before the school year starts.

The work included installing 20 new crosswalks, an ADA ramp, sidewalk, pathway and signage projects, as well as refreshing and repainting more than 65 existing crosswalks throughout the county.

“Our team has worked diligently to make critical transportation improvements, repairs and upgrades to ensure that more people of all ages and abilities can safely connect to neighborhoods, parks, schools, and other destinations throughout our county,” Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced Thursday.

Completed throughout the summer, the transportation improvements were identified and prioritized by the Howard County Office of Transportation and the department of public works to improve connectivity and pedestrian safety across the county. These projects also are located within local school walk zones and designed to enhance the safety of students and families who use walking routes to travel between school and home.

These improvements include the Montgomery Road sidewalk project in Elkridge, which provides a safe pedestrian connection for more than 1,100 nearby households to Elkridge Elementary School and Elkridge Landing Middle School.
