HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A math specialist at Bonnie Branch Middle School has sued the Howard County Board of Education for $750,000, claiming race discrimination and due process violations.
Court documents show that the educator, Marchona Sanders, a Black woman, was "pushed, yelled at and blocked from leaving a school conference room by a student’s father, a white man."
The complaint states that Sanders had to crawl between the man and a recycling bin in order to leave the room on Nov. 6, 2023. Other staff members witnessed the incident but didn’t intervene, according to the complaint.
The lawsuit notes that Sanders was injured during the incident. She reported the assault to her supervisor who "downplayed it and made a statement reflecting gender and racial stereotypes." A month later, she suffered a stress-induced stroke, The Baltimore Sun reported.
