Lane Closure Affects Traffic Flow During Road Construction Project

Drivers are reminded of a construction project in Elkridge that will reduce traffic to one lane.

ELKRIDGE, MD — Drivers should be aware of a construction project designed to make a stretch of road in Elkridge safer that will reduce travel lanes to one.

Work for this project should wrap up by the middle of the month.

Construction crews are installing speed humps, signs, speed reduction markings and pavement markings that state "school" along Old Washington Road in Elkridge.

The affected road also leads to the site of the new Elkridge Community and 50+ Center at 6371 Old Washington Rd., officials stated.

The project is part of the Howard County Neighborhood Traffic Calming Policy designed to combat excessive vehicular speeds along roads.

"In Howard County, we are committed to making our streets and roads safer for pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers and all road users. Through our Neighborhood Traffic Calming program, we are bringing more traffic calming solutions to neighborhoods to slow down speeds and improve safety across the county. When complete, this neighborhood roadway in Elkridge will be safer and more friendly for all," stated Howard County Executive Calvin Ball.

Signs will be in place to remind residents and drivers of the roadwork, and flagging operations will direct traffic through the construction zone, since only one lane will be open to vehicles during work hours weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
