The Maryland State Highway Administration initially reported that the two right lanes were closed and shared a photo showing a hole with exposed rebar.

Officials later closed three lanes for the more extensive repair, causing major delays during the afternoon commute, according to WTOP.

Crews hoped to reopen the lanes Wednesday evening or early Thursday, before the morning rush. Drivers were advised to use U.S. 29, U.S. 1 or MD 295 as alternate routes.
