Area salon helps combat domestic sex trafficking and raise funds for victims

local business engages in the work of combatting domestic sex trafficking and supporting a local victim services agency

January 11 is nationally recognized as Human Trafficking and Slavery Awareness Day. In a campaign called “Your New Look. Her New Life,” Luna Day Spa in Ellicott City, Maryland is helping to raise awareness about domestic sex trafficking and giving back by supporting survivors. Throughout the month of January, Luna Day Spa will donate a percentage of their proceeds to support the work of The Samaritan Women, a national Christian victim services agency located in Maryland that is celebrating its “First Decade of Abolition.”

“We can each do something, and it starts with education. Spas and salons interact with a large number of people, so we can help increase the impact of awareness,” remarks Sonia Singh of Luna’s Day Spa in Ellicott City. “We’re donating 10% of all services in the month of January to commemorate The Samaritan Women’s 10-year anniversary. And we’ll be hosting a public event on January 27, 2017 to present our support to representatives from The Samaritan Woman. We’re hoping this campaign inspires our clients—and our salon colleagues--to do even more to support these courageous survivors.”

“We are beginning to see how this heinous crime affects even legitimate businesses. When we learned from spa owners that they get calls from sex buyers, assuming that those legitimate businesses offered illegal services, we knew we needed to collaborate,” comments Jeanne Allert, Founder and Executive Director of The Samaritan Women. “We are providing salon staff with training, and their patrons with awareness materials. We’re hoping more salons and spas in the Baltimore-Washington area will join in this campaign.”
