Boys' Lacrosse: Marriotts Ridge Beats Mt. Hebron

The Mustangs get an important playoff win over the Vikings, 13-10.

In the latest installment of the rivalry between the Mt. Hebron and Marriotts Ridge lacrosse teams, the top seeded Marriotts Ridge Mustangs came out on top in a 13-10 playoff win Saturday.

After the game, Marriotts Ridge Coach Dan Sageman said, “No matter what the records are, when Hebron and Marriotts Ridge play together, it’s going to be a very emotional game.”

The Mt. Hebron Vikings’ lacrosse team has always been one of the best in the county. Since Marriotts Ridge (the newest school in Howard County) came to be, the Mustangs have emerged as a top rival and have survived tough playoff games against Hebron the last two years.

As a playoff lacrosse game between storied schools, the intensity and physicality shown by both teams was no surprise. Hebron was always a step behind the Mustangs but still fought hard throughout the game. Even with the game out of reach, down 13-6 with three minutes to play, the Vikings would not give up and scored four more goals before time ran out to try and keep their season alive.

Mt. Hebron Coach Michael McCarthy always takes a loss hard, but he acknowledged his team’s tough, physical play.

“I won’t say that we didn’t play hard, because we played hard,” McCarthy said after the game. “We’ve emphasized that [physicality] all year long, but it hasn’t really come around until today.”

Marriotts Ridge jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, giving them a big enough cushion that Mt. Hebron couldn’t catch up.

It didn’t stop the Vikings from trying.

Down 9-3, Cody Gould scored twice and Jake Stevens and Drew Hunt once. By early in the fourth quarter the deficit had been cut to 10-7.

But Marriotts Ridge’s Pat Serio scored twice and teammate Peter Bradley also added a goal, running the total to 13 and ensuring that Mt. Hebron’s late game heroics would not be enough.

Serio scored five goals to lead the Mustangs. He acknowledged the Vikings after the game saying, “ It’s always a great game when we play Hebron, and always a big win when we do beat ‘em.”
