Chanukah On Ice, Other Celebrations Planned For December In Howard County

Several activities have been planned to celebrate the Jewish Festival of Lights in December in Howard County.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Chanukah on Ice, designed to celebrate the Jewish Festival of Lights, will take place Dec. 10 and feature ice skating, face painting and the lighting of a 6-foot-tall menorah made of ice.

“Our response to hatred must never be to cower or hide our faith; we must hold our heads high and live proudly as Jews,” said Rabbi Yanky Baron, director of development at Chabad of Howard County. “They want us to be afraid; but our victory will be to stand tall and proud, gathering in greater numbers than ever to celebrate our Judaism in public.”

The event at ColorBurst Park, 6000 Merriweather Dr. in Columbia, will feature an interactive presentation with Mega Robot NY from Laser Show USA and will be joined by local public officials. Participants can enjoy traditional Chanukah foods such as latkes — potato pancakes — and jelly filled donuts. Complimentary menorahs, candles and children’s toys will be distributed for participants to light at home.

The menorah lighting is part of the worldwide Chanukah campaign launched by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, in 1973, according to the Chabad of Howard County. The campaign highlights the central theme of the holiday—publicizing the story of the Chanukah miracle and the victory of light over darkness.

Throughout the eight-day holiday, Chabad Lubavitch will be facilitating several menorah displays and public menorah lightings in public areas, nursing homes and other locations around Howard County. They also will be volunteering to provide Chanukah care packages to those in need, the elderly and homebound, as well as Menorah Factories for local school children.

There also will be a pre-Chanukah women's event where participants can make their own olive oil vase jug with artist Chana First on Dec. 3.

On Dec. 7, there will be a Hanukkah celebration at the Ellicott City 50+ Center, 9411 Frederick Rd. A kosher roast beef boxed lunch with trimmings and dessert will be included.

Another Chanukah celebration also will be held Dec. 12 at Main Street and Ellicott Mills Road as the menorah will be light.
