HOWARD COUNTY, MD — A community candle lighting event commemorating Chanukah will be Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Howard County’s Harriett Tubman Culture Center, 8045 Harriet Tubman Lane in Columbia. Chanukah started Dec. 7 and will continue through Dec. 15.
“Chanukah is a time that holds deep significance, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and the resilience of the human spirit. As we kindle the menorah, let us reflect on the enduring message of Chanukah – the power of perseverance and the importance of coming together to overcome adversity,” said Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “In these times of uncertainty and amid the challenges we face globally, including unrest in the Middle East, we stand firm in our dedication to fostering understanding, respect and compassion among all residents. As we gather to celebrate, may the warmth of the Chanukah lights inspire us to continue working together, building bridges of understanding and creating a brighter future for all.”
Joel Frankel, president of the Jewish Federation of Howard County, expressed gratitude toward the support for the Jewish community.

“The Jewish Federation of Howard County is grateful that with this program the county executive is setting an example of what it means to be supportive of the Jewish community during this difficult time,” Frankel said. “With so much darkness in the world right now, and so many public officials choosing to ignore the rise in antisemitism that is ravaging the country, this is a tremendous opportunity to bring light and joy into our community.”
