Crystal Griner Throws First Pitch In Women's Congressional Softball Game: Video

The Mount Hebron High School alumna threw the first pitch at the congressional matchup.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A week after a gunman opened fire at a GOP congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, one of the heroic Capitol Police officers, Special Agent Crystal Griner, was released from the hospital and had a special way to celebrate. Griner threw the first pitch at the Women's Congressional Softball Game Wednesday night.

Griner played softball during her high school career at Mount Hebron High School in Ellicott City, making First Team All-County 2001 and becoming MVP in 2001. She also played basketball in high school and college.

Griner was shot in the ankle June 14 while exchanging gunfire with the shooter at the congressional baseball game. Griner, Bailey and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise were injured, along with three others.

The shooter died from gunshot wounds at the hospital. Witnesses to the shooting say the Capitol Police officers' quick response prevented death and further injuries.

Like the Congressional Baseball Game, the softball game raises money for charity.

Members of Congress square off versus reporters in the D.C. press corps to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition, which helps young women with breast cancer.
