Ellicott City Man Pleads Guilty In Friend's Shooting Death

ELLICOTT CITY, MD — A 21-year-old Ellicott City man has pleaded guilty in the shooting of his friend. Rane Dellinger was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence in the shooting death of Jacob Mauer, 20, also of Ellicott City.

Mauer was shot June 1 in the 4200 block of Montgomery Road shortly before 10 p.m. After Howard County officers investigated the incident, they determined that Dellinger, Mauer and a third person were sitting in a car parked behind a building. Dellinger and the third person were using drugs and playing with a gun, according to a police report. Police say Dellinger fired a single shot that struck Mauer, who then fled the scene. Mauer was pronounced dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Dellinger was apprehended June 3 in North Carolina and extradited back to Howard County. He will be sentenced March 6.
