Ellicott City Sports Report for Tuesday January 3, 2012
Area teams return to action after winter break

The Eagles’ (6-2, 6-0) boys basketball team, after dropping two non-county games, will return to the hardwood, and their county schedule, with a game at (2-6, 2-4) today. Prior to their last start, standout Keonte Potts was averaging 23 points a game for the Eagles. Centennial boys’ basketball can be followed at www.centennialeaglesbasketball.org.
The good news for the Chapelgate (8-4, 3-2) boys’ basketball team is a return home after their Christmas break to resume their 2011-2012 campaign. The bad news is that the return to the court is against one of their toughest opponents of the season in the Gilman Greyhounds (7-3, 4-0). Undefeated in the MIAA-B, Gilman also has knocked off Calvert Hall of the MIAA-A, in a game that saw Alabama football coach Nick Saban in attendance. Saban was there to watch Gilman shooting guard Cyrus Jones, an All-American on the gridiron this fall. Jones and his fellow Greyhounds will face the Yellowjackets tonight at 5 PM.
The Yellowjackets’ JV team is 8-1 overall and 5-0 in-conference. They also face Gilman this week.

Howard Community College has two players from the Ellicott City Patch area on their 2011-2012 roster. Sophomore guard Aaron Bellamy is a former Howard Lion, while freshman guard Winfield Taylor played his high school basketball at Chapelgate. Taylor was the leading scoring for last year’s 25-7 Yellowjackets' squad that captured the MIAA-C.
