Ellicott City Sports Report, October 21, 2011

Football/soccer postseasons begin to emerge for area teams.

River Hill dealt the girls’ soccer team its first loss of the season earlier this week. The Hawks moved to 10-2-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the county, while the Eagles dropped to 10-1-2 overall and 7-1-2 within the county. Freshman Ann Mitchell had the only goal for Centennial in the 2-1 loss. Centennial’s latest news and photos can be found on the team’s page on the Eagles’ website.

Chapelgate boys' soccer is 8-1-1 in conference and 9-2-1 overall, as of Thursday, good for first place in the MIAA-C Black Division. The girls’ team holds steady in first place in the IAAM-C, with a 6-0 conference mark and a stellar 11-1 overall record.

Ellicott City’s (River Hill) added to his impressive season totals for LaSalle by putting home the game winner against the Rhode Island Rams on October 14. Plumhoff now has 13 points on 5 goals and three assists for the Explorers (4-6-3). He was joined on the LaSalle roster this fall by fellow Ellicott City resident Pat Sullivan, a Marriotts Ridge graduate. Sullivan was the 2009 Howard County Player of the Year in soccer and has seen time in 12 of the 13 LaSalle contests this year.

In addition to having four , the Salisbury University soccer team boasts a trio of area players. Senior goalie Brandon Mumby (River Hill), junior midfielder Jimmy Mundy (Centennial), and freshman midfielder Nick Buric (Mt. St. Joseph) are all on the Gulls’ roster. Mumby has started four games in goal for Salisbury (9-2-3) and has an .842 save percentage.

The Ellicott City Patriots’ 11-13 National team has earned a berth in the Mid-Maryland playoffs with a 6-2 mark through eight games. The 11-13 squad concludes their regular season on Saturday against a 5-3 Maplewood team. The 10-12 National team has also locked up a playoff spot on the strength of a 7-1 mark to date. The 10-12 Pats conclude their regular season against a league-leading 8-0 Maplewood club.

The Vikings (2-5) will try to return to their winning ways tonight when they face the Marriotts Ridge Mustangs in Marriottsville. The Mustangs are winless on the season at 0-7. Highlights from last week’s Hebron homecoming are available on the team’s website.

Centennial’s football team faces River Hill in Clarksville tonight. The Hawks are 5-2 on the season and tied with in the county standings, while the Eagles are pursuing their first victory. 

According to maxpreps.com the Vikings are #123 overall in the state while the Eagles weigh in at #158. Hebron also held the advantage on the field on September 23, when the two teams faced and the Vikings came away with the 21-14 victory.

Salisbury University football is 6-0 on the year. Howard grad Tyler Curley has added a receiving and rushing TD to date for the Gulls, while former Lion Calvin Ford is up to 31 tackles on the season. 

Outside linebacker Aaron Maybin (Mt. Hebron) is currently listed as #2 on the New York Jets’ depth chart behind starter Calvin Pace. Maybin has registered two sacks for the Jets (3-3) on the year, and has forced three fumbles, including two in last week’s win over the Dolphins.
