Join the HCRP Trail Hike program on the Appalachian Trail as it crosses Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, featuring historic Civil War sights and panoramic views of mountains and valleys; trip leaders will interpret points of interest and keep a moderate pace. Earn a certificate and patch by hiking each of the seven sections in the Maryland Appalachian Trail series at least once within a 3-year period. RP9180.802, Section #7: This hike is one of the most popular and rewarding hikes of the AT in the region. Hiking north to south, it is considered the hike that leads you from the Union into the Confederacy. It features a secluded forest ridge top, an invigorating landscape that allows you to look straight down into the Potomac River and the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Towpath. Stop for lunch at Maryland Heights overlooking the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, and visit the site of John Brown’s raid in historic Harpers Ferry and AT Headquarters (open at the end of May). Flat terrain, 5.5 miles.
