Health Screenings Offered At HoCo Fairgrounds

There will be free health screenings on Saturday, April 14.

From University of Maryland School of Pharmacy: WHAT: Student pharmacists from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and partners will provide health screenings and more during a fun-filled event for the whole family. Food vouchers can be redeemed for Korean-American cuisine and specialty ice cream from local food trucks. Free, multi-cultural entertainment features live performances on an outdoor stage.

Inside the adjacent venue, student volunteers and community partners will provide blood-pressure screenings, pneumonia vaccinations, and patient education on topics ranging from safe use of over-the-counter medications to diabetes risk assessment and management. Nearby, a Colgate-sponsored mobile clinic will offer children’s dental screenings at no charge.

WHEN: Saturday, April 14, 2018, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WHERE: Howard County Fairgrounds, 2210 Fairground Rd., West Friendship, Md.

WHO: Performances by Thapasya School of Dance, presenting an Indian classical dance art form (11 a.m.); U.S. Jow Ga Martial Arts, based on Chinese Kung Fu (noon); and Carroll County Cloggers, in a dance form derived from Appalachian folk dances (1 p.m.) Food available from Koco Food Truck(Korean-American fusion) and Quinn’s Ice (lactose-free ice cream). Organized by members of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy with support by other student groups at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) such as LatinX Unidos for Community Healing and Awareness, the Organization of African-American Students in Social Work, the Muslim Students and Scholars Association, and the University Student Government Association at UMB.

INFO: Health screenings and vaccinations will be overseen or administered by community pharmacists, including participants from Giant who will be able to assist in obtaining insurance reimbursement of vaccines. With this event, dozens of student volunteers aim to promote diversity and acceptance while simultaneously offering patient education and family fun, says Charles Summerlin, one of the APhA-ASP organizers. The Howard County Fairgrounds will likely be busy on Saturday as the venue is simultaneously hosting a “Kids Nearly New Sale” and two shows by the Great Dane Club of Maryland.
