Howard County Center for the Arts Hosts Two New Exhibits

The Arts Council announces two new exhibits at the Howard County Center for the Arts: Building Perspectives and Kaleidoscope

The Howard County Arts Council announces two new exhibits in the galleries at the Howard County Center for the Arts. Building Perspectives, in Gallery I, features work by five artists – Ashley DuRoss, Lillian Bayley Hoover, Robert Tennenbaum, April Rimpo, and K. Velis Turan –whose explorations of constructed spaces and urban landscapes produce unique and often abstracted works. DuRoss manipulates the light and spatial relations of ordinary interiors in her oil paintings to emphasize the space that fills the physical structures, while Hoover take us outside for still and simple oil paintings of both neighborhood constructions and global sites of power, and Tennenbaum draws on his background in city planning to pull us even further out in his map-abstractions of major cities. Meanwhile, Rimpo and Turan use a more representational perspective on urban spaces in two very different mediums – water media and textiles.

Gallery II’s Kaleidoscope, featuring Katie Chen and Bernard Zubrowski, is a fusion of color and movement as Chen’s brilliantly hued mixed-media works are balanced by Zubrowski’s mesmerizing kinetic sculptures. Inspired by her oil painter grandfather, but looking for environmentally-friendly ways to create, Chen emulates the rich color and texture of oil paints with her vibrant collages recycled from magazines. Their swirling, musical compositions are echoed in Zubrowski’s sculptures that with a touch from the viewer transform simple steel lines into rhythmic patterns and fluctuating shapes.

Building Perspectives and Kaleidoscope will be on display from September 5 through October 17, 2014.
