Howard County Center for the Arts Hosts Two New Exhibits

Vertex and Piece by Piece will be on display from September 4 through October 16, 2015.

The Howard County Arts Council announces two new exhibits in the galleries at the Howard County Center for the Arts: Vertex and Piece by Piece

Vertex, in Gallery I, features the work of artists Michael Hough, Haeley Kyong, Laura Petrovich-Cheney, and Robert Sibbison working with shape and structure through painting, sculpture, and assemblage. Mathematics and geometry are evident in all the artists’ work, but most overtly in Kyong’s paintings of interlocking and overlapping shapes that resemble folded paper. Using geometry to mimic another medium, this time quilts, Laura Petrovich-Cheney transforms salvaged wood washed up onto the New Jersey coastline following Hurricane Sandy to create abstract artworks. Michael Hough also works with found and salvaged materials, primarily iron and steel, to build sculptures with both formalist relations and narrative connections. And Robert Sibbison’s large three-dimensional sculptures and wall reliefs counter structure with varying surface materials in what he calls his attempt “to achieve a perceptual presence”.

Gallery II’s Piece by Piece exhibits the artwork of Travis Childers and Dominie Nash. Childers lifts found images from newspapers and collages them in large grids based on themes such as plants, eyes, and horizons. The monochromatic pieces in Dominie Nash’s Big Leaf Series are fabric collages using monoprinting, frottage and quilting to highlight the shape and structure of leaves.
