education opportunities
volunteer opportunities

employment
Beginning in December 2016, at least 400 Howard County seniors will receive these services as residents of a new senior living community in Ellicott City. The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community will provide housing as well as access to on-site health care services, transportation, social activities, volunteer opportunities, and health and wellness facilities.
“According to industry studies, older adults who engage in social and active lifestyles, receive proper medical care and practice overall good health and wellness live longer and happier lives,” says Geary Milliken, president and CEO of Carroll Lutheran Village, the sponsor of The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT. “As the newest and largest continuing care retirement communities in Howard County, MILLER’S GRANT will provide residents with activities that interest them and help them maintain an active lifestyle while having amenities and services to make their lives easier. This in turn will help reduce the demand on county services.”
As the opening of The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT approaches, the retirement community will also impact Howard County in other areas, such as:
employment
real estate and associated services
revenue
taxes
community reinvestment
“Once MILLER’S GRANT is completed, it will provide employment opportunities for approximately 88 full-time employees and many other part-time positions,” says Steve Powell, vice president of finance at Carroll Lutheran Village. “Currently, Carroll Lutheran Village is partnering with Howard County companies Harkins Builders and Williamsburg Homes to build MILLER’S GRANT and is investing over $85 million in its construction, resulting in local jobs and an immediate contribution to the tax base.”
The real estate industry in Howard County will also see a positive impact from the construction of MILLER’S GRANT. “As residents prepare to move to MILLER’S GRANT, there will be an influx of available housing,” continues Powell. “This often generates income for the County with additional transfer tax revenue and Realtors and ancillary service providers. It can also affect spending on home improvement, landscaping, home decor and furnishings.”
As an organization committed to volunteerism, The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT will also positively impact Howard County by reinvesting in the community. “Carroll Lutheran Village is dedicated to giving back to its surrounding community. This year, we received the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit Partner in Business Award,” says Brenda Becker, vice president of marketing and communications for Carroll Lutheran Village. “We look forward to establishing partnerships within Ellicott City and Howard County to continue our philanthropic efforts and be a vital part of this dynamic community.”
The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT is located at 9531 Frederick Road. The 50-acre parcel was donated to Carroll Lutheran Village of Westminster, the sponsor organization for The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT, by the Charles E. Miller family, who also contributed land to the adjoining Miller Branch of the Howard County Public Library and Ellicott City Senior Center. It is approved for 241 independent living residences, 20 assisted living suites and 12 comprehensive care beds. More than 85 percent of the homes and apartments are already reserved. Occupancy is expected to begin in December 2015.
