Ellicott City Man Charged With Murder: Police

An Ellicott City resident has been charged with murder in the death of a man he was using drugs with Saturday night, according to police.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD — An Ellicott City man has been charged with murder and other offenses in connection with a homicide that occurred Saturday on Montgomery Road, police said. After he ran from the scene of the shooting Saturday night, the suspect in the murder was taken into custody Monday morning in North Carolina, according to the Howard County Police Department.

Rane Dellinger, 20, of Autumn Hill Drive in Ellicott City, is charged with first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony and illegal possession of a handgun, police said.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Saturday night. Authorities said they responded to a report of a man shot in a parked car in the 4200 block of Montgomery Road before 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.

Jacob Robert Mauer, 20, of Haycarriage Court in Ellicott City, was pronounced dead at the scene, police reported.

While investigators are still working to understand the circumstances leading up to the shooting, they said they believe Dellinger shot Mauer while they were using drugs with a friend in a car that was parked behind a building.

Detectives followed leads that Dellinger may be in Cumberland County, North Carolina, and local police found him in a vehicle early Monday morning, officials said. He was arrested in North Carolina without incident nearly 30 hours after Mauer was shot to death, police said.

Officials in Howard County are coordinating with authorities in North Carolina to arrange his extradition back to Maryland, police reported Monday morning.

Authorities said they responded to the 4200 block of Montgomery Road, where a man was reportedly shot in his parked car before 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.
