Masks Still Required In HCPSS Buildings, On Buses In Howard County

Masks must still be worn inside HCPSS buildings and on buses even though the countywide mask mandate has been lifted for indoor facilities.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Although the countywide mask mandate for indoor private facilities has been lifted across Howard County, students and staff still are required to wear masks in Howard County Public School System buildings, offices and on school buses.

In July 2021, HCPSS implemented a mask requirement for all staff, students and visitors, regardless of vaccination status. That requirement preceded any state-level mask mandates for schools and was put in place as part of the district's multi-layered mitigation strategies.

"The HCPSS mitigation measures implemented in our schools and buildings were driven by the goal to return to in-person instruction but also to remain open for the entire year," the district noted.
