Outdoor Sporting Events, Practices Canceled For Tuesday Due To Temps: HCPSS

Due to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, HCPSS won't hold outdoor sporting events and practices Tuesday.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — All outdoor sporting events and practices with the Howard County Public School System have been canceled for Tuesday, Sept. 5, due to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service.

Athletics and activities managers and coaches will communicate with teams if activities are able to be brought indoors.

Temperatures are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s and heat index values of 100 to 105 are expected, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures could reach 100 degrees on Wednesday. Areas under the heat advisory include Anne Arundel, Carroll, Cecil, Howard, Montgomery, Charles, Frederick, Baltimore, Harford, Howard, Prince George's counties and Baltimore City, according to the NWS.

Outdoor recess and physical education classes will be held this week, but teachers and staff are planning for less strenuous activities during PE and more opportunities for water breaks, the school district noted. Students will be allowed to carry water bottles with them during PE, recess and throughout the day.

All schools are equipped with water fountains and water bottle refill stations, and students are encouraged to use those as needed, the school district added.
