Volunteers Needed To Serve On Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission In Howard County

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Adult and student volunteers are needed to serve on Howard County's Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission. Members service three-year terms, while student members, who are non-voting members, serve a one-year term from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024. The deadline to apply falls on March 10.

“Each year, we honor the leadership, life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and continually recognize that his perspective is more important than ever,” Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said. “I encourage our young residents to apply for this position, so they, too, can be a part of the Commission’s work to build on the lessons of Dr. King and help improve our county.”

Established in 1985, the Commission consists of 17 members (15 adults and two students) who encourage and coordinate appropriate activities and ceremonies throughout Howard County to honor the birthday, ideals and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Commission also aids local government and private organizations with respect to the observance of the holiday honoring the birthday of the late Dr. King.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must be a Howard County resident, 18 years or older for adult members or a high school student for student members, and able to attend meetings on the first Wednesday of each month from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Howard County Community Resources Campus, 9820 Patuxent Woods Drive in Columbia. Members also must be able to attend subcommittee meetings and other scheduled meetings.

Included with the email, applicants should attach their resume and a brief letter explaining why they want to serve on the commission. Applicants are asked not to include their contact information, i.e., home address, phone number(s) and email address, on their resume and cover letter. The names of eligible applicants will be submitted to the County Executive for consideration. If approved, the appointment will be forwarded to the County Council for confirmation.
