1 Hospitalized from Officer-Involved Shooting: Police
An assault with a hatchet allegedly preceded a weekend shooting in Middle River.

MIDDLE RIVER, MD – Two men are hospitalized Monday after a weekend incident involving a hatchet in Middle River, police said.
Authorities say one of the men assaulted a man and woman with a hatchet inside a home in the 200 block of Wampler Road.
Both assault victims were hospitalized, and while the female victim had been released, police said the man had not.

The man did not know the couple. During the assault, which happened before 7 p.m. on Saturday, police said the suspect was accompanied by a woman.
Authorities traced the suspect to his home in the 300 block of Grovethorn Road, where a relative let police inside.

Upon going downstairs where the man lived, police said the suspect jumped out from under the stairs and had a knife in his hand, which he had used to cut his throat. He fell, dropped the knife, then picked it up and lunged at the officer, who fired her service weapon once, according to police.
Other officials gave first aid to the individual, who was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in stable but critical condition Monday.
The officer is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Charges are possible against the man who allegedly assaulted the man and woman with a hatchet.
