Officers came to a residence where Boyd and his girlfriend had been arguing on Akin Circle after receiving 911 calls in which the two could be heard screaming at 3:09 a.m. on Sunday; when police arrived, the two were yelling, and the woman reportedly told law enforcement that Boyd was on alcohol and drugs.
Boyd was sweating heavily and seemed paranoid and confused, according to police.

After officers tried to calm him down, police said that Boyd ran to several marked police cars and tried to get in, and started banging on the doors of his neighbors.
When police decided that Boyd should be taken to a hospital for an emergency evaluation, he did not follow their orders and got into a physical struggle with them, according to officials.
During the encounter, officials called for medical assistance, which arrived at 3:30 a.m.
Three officers had injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Authorities said Boyd was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
