25 People Evacuated After Amtrak Train Catches Fire In Essex

ESSEX, MD — More than two dozen travelers were evacuated from an Amtrak train late Thursday in Essex after a fire broke out on a train car.

The Baltimore County Fire Department said a total of 25 people were forced to evacuate and that at least two people suffered minor injuries.

First responders were dispatched to the stationary Amtrak train around 6 p.m., near the intersection of Canberra Drive and Waterview Way.

Train traffic had been halted as officials worked the scene.

Of the two injured travelers, one individual refused hospitalization, BCFD said.

The blaze was extinguished by 6:30 p.m., with evacuated passengers later returning to unaffected train cars.

The fire department said the train was carrying 189 passengers when reports of the fire first emerged. The train was later cleared to its next stop.

Officials did not provide additional details regarding the incident or detail what prompted the fire.
