Kenwood Boys Track Team Takes Len Patrick Title

Mount Carmel shines in baseball, Eastern Tech softball still undefeated, and Mavericks baseball bounces back.

Kenwood finished with 151 team points as the host Bluebirds boys track and field team took first place in the Len Patrick Invitational on Saturday.

On the boys side, Frederick took second place in the meet with 117.3 points, followed by Dundalk (64), Eastern Tech (52), Chesapeake-B (39.3), Coppin Academy (35.3), Overlea (32) and Chesapeake-BC (6).

The meet was named in honor of the late Len Patrick, a longtime Kenwood teacher and coach who died of brain cancer in November.

Among the top performers for Kenwood were Jamie Nixon-Alark, who placed first in the 110-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, second in 100 dash and first in the 4x100 relay along with Keith Moody, Jaleel Feggins and Tavon Lucas.

Lucas also placed in the 300 hurdles, fourth in the high jump and first in the 4x200 relay with Feggins, Moody and James Hicks.

Also for Kenwood, Travis Jenkins won the long jump and triple jump and took second in the high jump and 300 hurdles. In addition, Andrew Powis, Andrew Diesenberg, Terrell Griffin and Rodney Hardy took third place in the 4x800 relay while Moody took second in the 400 and third in the 200.

Nyonbou Farley, Xavier Franklin, Travis Baugher and James Hicks placed second in the 4x200 relay, while Franklin and Hicks were also second and third in the triple jump, respectively.

On the girls side, Mount de Sales won the team title with 154 points while Kenwood was fourth with 54 points, Eastern Tech was eighth (16) and Chesapeake -BC was 11th (4).

For Kenwood, Jada Boyd broke two school records in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13:16 and the 800-meter run at 2:38.1.  She came in second in the 3,200, fourth in the 800 and third in the 1,600. Also, Alexis Moog placed third in the 400 dash and fifth in the 200.

Jenkins was named male athlete of the meet while Kelsey Fiddes of Mercy High School was the female athlete of the meet.

Mount Carmel Baseball Tops in MIAA 'B' Black Division

Having swept all three of last week's games, the Mount Carmel baseball team improved to 11-0 in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association's B Conference Black Division, and, 14-2 overall.

The Cougars defeated St. Mary's, Boys Latin and Glenelg Country School by scores of 12-3, 9-5 and 8-0, respectively.

In addition, the Cougars, led by 19th-year coach Mike Naunton, already have clinched a berth into the league playoffs, which begin on May 13.

Against St. Mary's, junior Evan Covelley was 3-for-4, with two doubles and earned the victory over six innings pitched, during which he struck out eight batters. Junior Kory Puller was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.

All-Conference player Mike Krannebitter, whom Naunton considers to be the best defensive catcher in the league, was 2-for-4 and had a "strong game behind the plate blocking balls," Naunton said.

In the triumph over Boys' Latin, Krannebitter reached the bases five times on two hits and three walks, and Puller was 2-for-3, with a double and two RBIs.

Ian Arciaga was 2-for-3, with a double and two RBIs, and struck out 10 batters over six innings pitched for the win over Boys' Latin. Zack Pugh was 2-for-5 with two each in runs scored and steals.
 
Arciaga hit for the cycle with three RBIs against Glenelg Country School, a game during which seven Cougars starters registered hits, with five of them having multiple-hit games.

Pitcher Bobby Sanzone struck out 12 batters and yielded only two hits in five innings. At the plate, Sanzone was 2-for-4, with three RBIs and a bases-loaded triple.

Puller, Paul Lagaz and Alex Hansford came up with two hits each, with Hansfort getting the save on two innings pitched.

The Cougars visit league rival St. Vincent Pallotti on Wednesday and play host to Poly of Baltimore City on Thursday.

Eastern Tech Softball Goes 3-0 Last Week

Eastern Tech's freshman right-hander Jordan Cargile struck out nine batters and yielded no walks against seven hits that were scattered during Wednesday's 5-4, nine-inning victory at Baltimore County rival Franklin.

On Thursday and Friday, the Mavericks handled Loch Raven and Dulaney, 16-1 and 8-4, respectively to rise to 5-0 in the league and 11-0 overall.

Against Franklin, junior catcher Alexis Peay went 2-for-4 with a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the ninth, and senior Carly Wheat singled for an RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Also contributing to the Franklin win was sophomore center fielder Lindsay Meyers, who nailed a game-tying single in the bottom of the sixth that sent the contest into extra innings.

Against Loch Raven, Cargile and Liz Bondarenko combined for the victory, during which Carly Wheat and Lauren Channell both doubled, and Cargile tripled.

Bondarenko doubled against Dulaney, with Cargile picking up the win to improve to 7-0. 

Mavericks Baseball Wins Twice

Eastern Tech's baseball team scored back-to-back victories over Baltimore County rivals Franklin and Dulaney by scores of 5-2 and 15-1 on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

On Friday against Franklin, Nick McElfish scored twice, Jimmy Szamski had two RBIs and scored once and Matt Evans had an RBI.

Also against Franklin, Ben Gettier scored once and had an RBI, Neil Westdrop contributed another RBI, and Adam Szamski scored once for the Mavericks, who are 7-4.

Against Dulaney, Tim Heim had a double, three RBIs and a run scored, Josh Entwhistle contributed two RBIs and two runs scored while Jimmy Szamski scored four times and walked three times and McElfish added a double and two runs scored.

Finally, Evans hit double and had two RBIs, Chris Hook contributed a double and three RBIs. Westdrop scored twice, Andy Szamski had a triple, an RBI and scored once, and Gettier had an RBI and scored once.
