Prep Softball: Eastern Tech Sets Sights on Baltimore County Championship

“Today was our first home game so the girls were a little nervous,” Eastern Tech coach Jack Meyers said. “But once we got in the groove, we put it all together: pitching, catching and hitting.

Catcher Alexis Peay, the Mavericks' leadoff hitter, set the tone against Patapsco, crushing the first pitch of the game into left field for a leadoff home run.
“I always believe that the first pitch of the game is the best pitch of the game. It was a little bit inside so I just took it and went,” Peay said. “When I rounded second I saw the outfielder with the ball in her hand so I thought coach was going to hold me up, but he sent me home.”

The players have really bought into the team-first attitude Meyers has fostered. For example, the team website does not list Maverick stats but does list stats for the other team.
“I have no idea what my stats were today,” Eastern Tech left fielder Ashley Sauerwein said. “It's all just about the team. We know what we have to do to accomplish our goal of winning the county championship.”
Freshman pitcher Jordan Cargile started the game for Eastern Tech, but after several innings of shutout ball she gave way to senior Liz Bondarenko, who continued the Mavericks' dominence on the mound.
“Both pitchers were phenomenal today,” Peay said. “If they mess up I have their back and if I mess up they have my back.”
Eastern Tech plays next at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday at and returns home on April against . They will face defending county champions Franklin on April 28.
“Our goal as a team is to knock off and bring home a Baltimore County Championship,” Meyers said.
