To save and find homes for the thousands of homeless cats and kittens in Harford County and all across Maryland, the Humane Society of Harford County (HSHC) is teaming up with 20 other shelters in the state to participate in the third annual Maryland 2,000 Saving Lives Across Maryland adoption event. From July 1 through July 31, HSHC and 20 other shelters will be waiving adoption fees for all felines with the collective goal of finding homes for at least 2,000 unwanted cats and kittens.
Cats and kittens of all ages and personalities will be available for adoption from the following 21 animal shelters in Maryland:
“This time of year is known in the animal sheltering community as Kitten Season due to the huge volume of kittens who are born during the warmer summer months,” said Jen Swanson, executive director of HSHC. “This surge of kittens and moms coming into our already full shelters makes it critical that we find them all homes so we can continue to take in other cats and kittens who need our help.”
“Last year, our group of 20 shelters exceeded the goal of the Maryland 2,000 and found homes for 2,590 cats and kittens,” said Cat Kelly, HSHC’s shelter operations director. “With an additional shelter on our team this year, we’re looking to exceed that goal and set a new Maryland 2,000 record! Plus, all adopters who adopt in July from HSHC, receive a certificate for a free feline wellness exam at Cat Sense Feline Hospital, 332 South Main Street in Bel Air. There’s never been a better time to enlarge your family by four little feet!”
Although adoption fees are waived, regular adoption procedures apply at all participating shelters during the Maryland 2,000. Cats and kittens adopted from HSHC include:
If the cat or kitten is not already spayed or neutered, a $50 deposit for a HASP (Harford Animal Sterilization Program) certificate is required. Adopters will be provided with a certificate for the surgical procedure and a list of participating veterinarians. The fee is refunded upon completion of the procedure within 60 days.
