1 Killed In Police Chase On I-270, Attorney General Investigating

Police said the crash happened early Saturday morning south of Route 28.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — A man is dead after he crashed his car on Interstate 270 early Saturday morning while fleeing police, according to Montgomery County authorities.

In a news release, Montgomery County police said officers were called to the ramp on Rockledge Road shortly after 5 a.m. to check on a man inside a car parked in the middle travel lane. When officers arrived, they found the man with a gun in his lap, according to police, and he appeared to be intoxicated.

According to police, the man drove away on northbound I-270. Police followed him, and authorities said the car crashed south of Route 28 after a brief pursuit.

Police said the man was ejected from the car during the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two adults in a separate car were taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

The Maryland attorney general's office is investigating the crash, the agency said in a news release Saturday afternoon. Maryland law requires the Office of the Attorney General to investigate all police-involved fatalities in the state.
