2 Killed in Four-Car, Head-On Gaithersburg Crash

Drivers from Gaithersburg and Laytonsville were killed Monday in a head-on crash when one driver crossed into oncoming traffic, police say.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — The drivers of two cars that crashed head-on into each other Monday night died at the accident scene, while two other drivers survived the four-car pileup in Gaithersburg, according to Montgomery County Police.

An off-duty police officer came across upon the crash on on Airpark Road in Gaithersburg just before 8 p.m. First responders found two two of the drivers had died from their injuries.

Investigators say Stephen Alexander Diaz, 27, of the 8200 block of Amity Circle in Gaithersburg, was eastbound on Airpark Road in a 1999 Honda Civic CX. Police say Diaz's Honda crossed into the westbound lanes and struck two vehicles: a 2002 Volkswagen Passat driven by George Thomas Carey, 67, of Farcroft Court in Laytonsville, and a 2010 Toyota Prius driven by Farhad Gholami, 25, of the 5900 block of Serenity Lane in Derwood.

A third westbound vehicle, a 1997 Mercury Villager driven by Hong Z. Wang, 65, of the 22100 block of Ginger Tree Way in Clarksburg, was also involved in the collision.

Diaz and Carey died from their injuries on the scene. Gholami and Wang declined treatment, authorities say.

Investigators are trying to determine why Diaz's vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police at 240.773.6620.
