4 Minors, 1 Adult Charged In Gaithersburg Football Game Brawl: Police

Montgomery County school officials suspended the football programs at Gaithersburg and Northwest high schools following the fight.

GAITHERSBURG, MD — Five people have been charged in connection with a massive brawl during Friday night's football game between Gaithersburg and Germantown's Northwest high schools that left a police officer and school staff member with injuries.

Gaithersburg police on Monday said four juveniles and a 19-year-old man of Germantown were all charged in connection with the fight. The juveniles were charged with one count of assault each, while the 19-year-old man was charged with second-degree assault, mutual affray, disorderly conduct, intoxicated endanger, and failure to obey lawful order, police said.

Authorities did not release the names of those charged.

Shortly before 8:25 p.m. Friday, Gaithersburg and Montgomery County police were called to the high school at 101 Education Blvd. for a report of a fight.

A witness told WTOP the fight began when players from both teams started fighting each other on the field. Coaches from both teams tried to stop the brawl, but ultimately ended up fighting each other.

The remainder of the game was canceled, according to NBC Washington. As everyone left, another fight broke out outside the stadium.

A school staff member suffered a non-life threatening injury, according to Gaithersburg police. A police officer was also assaulted but did not require medical care. Another person was treated for cuts, police said.

On Saturday, Montgomery County school officials temporarily suspended the football programs at Gaithersburg and Northwest high schools to aid police in their investigation.

In a statement released Saturday, officials with Montgomery County Public Schools condemned the fight, calling it "abhorrent and unacceptable behavior."
