GAITHERSBURG, MD — The Lightbridge Academy is expanding its presence in the state, but this time it's setting roots in Montgomery County.
The early childhood education franchise will be holding a groundbreaking ceremony in Gaithersburg on May 19 for its first site in the county.
The academy's new center will be located at 8490 N. Westland Drive, the space previously occupied by L&L Music Wind Shop, Inc.
Organizers are aiming for an opening in early 2027.
Lightbridge Academy provides care services for those as young as six weeks.
Educational programs for kindergarten-aged kids not only focus on math and science aspects, but also include curricula on social-emotional well-being and the creative arts, among other building blocks.
In a release provided to Patch, the company said it would be donating to the nonprofit Comfort Cases to show its commitment to the local community. Comfort Cases, also based out of Gaithersburg, provides kits for children in foster care.
"Choosing child care is a deeply personal decision for families," said Alexandra Edwards, the franchise owner of the Gaithersburg location.
"More than anything, parents want peace of mind knkowing their child is safe, nurtured, and encouraged to learn and grow. With our new Gaithersburg location, we're proud to create a new space where children feel secure and inspired every day — and where families can trust they're in compassionate, capable hands."
Launched in 1997, the child care company was founded as family business that put "equal importance on the needs of children, their families, teachers, center owners and the community."
The Gaithersburg location marks the fifth Lightbridge Academy in the state. Other locations can be found in Gambrills, Laurel, Lutherville-Timonium, and Frederick.
