📰 News we're reading

1. Weekend Round Up September 3, 2026 (georgetowner.com) — Gaithersburg residents can celebrate Labor Day close to home as the 88th annual Labor Day Parade returns to Olde Towne on Monday, stepping off at 10 a.m. with bands, dancers, antique cars, and community groups. The weekend also offers plenty of nearby options across the region, from DC JazzFest and a magic festival to art shows, food fairs, and a rooftop soccer day party.

2. Evidentiary hearing date set for Wootton High relocation case (bethesdamagazine.com) — Gaithersburg families face a major school shakeup as hearings are set for December on an appeal challenging the move of Rockville's Wootton High School community into the new Crown High School building in Gaithersburg. The case questions whether Montgomery County Public Schools can relocate a long-established school without triggering Maryland's school-closure protections, potentially affecting attendance zones and programming statewide starting in 2027–28.

3. Rio Office Building Sells for More Than $11 Million (mocoshow.com) — A major lakefront office building at Rio on Washingtonian Boulevard in Gaithersburg just sold for about $11.1 million, expanding Peterson Companies' footprint in the city. The five‑story Class A property sits within the popular Rio mixed‑use destination, reinforcing the area's appeal to employers looking for walkable amenities, restaurants, and greenspace for their workers.

4. Montgomery County car thefts rise 22% despite national decline (wjla.com) — Drivers in Gaithersburg should know that vehicle thefts are up sharply in Montgomery County, with the 6th District that includes Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village logging 324 stolen cars in a year. While statewide thefts are dropping, local numbers are rising, and police urge residents to lock vehicles, secure key fobs, park in well‑lit areas, and consider extra anti‑theft devices.

5. New MARC Train Service Will Connect Montgomery County, Baltimore (patch.com) — Gaithersburg commuters will soon get a one-seat weekday MARC ride to Baltimore, cutting the trip to Camden Station to about 78 minutes—roughly an hour faster than today. Starting Sept. 28, a new direct train will link Gaithersburg with Germantown, Rockville, Silver Spring, College Park, Laurel and Baltimore, but riders will need to review updated Brunswick and Camden Line schedules.
